World Change Challenge 2023

Join Room to Read's Writer Ambassadors and DROP EVERYTHING AND READ!

Room to Read believes: World Change Starts with Educated Children®. Through education, we can make illiteracy and gender inequality problems of the past.

In 2023 our team of Australian writer ambassadors & author advocates will raise funds to support the organisation’s inspiring Literacy Program. The Literacy Program ensures that children develop literacy skills and the habit of reading in early primary school to have a strong foundation for learning throughout their lifetimes.

More than 50% of primary school children living in low and middle income countries cannot read. With your help we can change this. Room to Read creates local language storybooks that readers at various levels can enjoy. We also develop educators, book creators and book publishers and grow libraries and library programs in which children and literature can flourish.

Since 2009, Australian writers and illustrators (see full list below) have helped Room to Read to spread the word about the importance of education and also raised over $215,000 to support Room to Read’s Literacy and Girls’ Education Programs.

It costs just $1 to put a local language storybook on the shelf of a school library. It costs just $40 to fill a shelf with books.

By DROPPING EVERYTHING AND READING you will be helping children learn to LOVE to read.

Decide on a simple fundraising activity for your school.

  • DROP EVERYTHING AND READ for 30 minutes on International Literacy Day, Friday 8th September 2023. Get sponsors and see how many shelves you can fill in a library. Check out our flyer for ideas of how to make this happen.
  • Have a mufti day at school and donate a gold coin.
  • Have a sausage sizzle at lunch time & donate the takings to Room to Read.
  • Have a slimefest at lunchtime, teachers or house captains offer to be publicly slimed and kids pay a gold coin to see it happen.

Room to Read believes: World Change Starts with Educated Children®. Through education, we can make illiteracy and gender inequality problems of the past.

In 2022 our team of Australian writer ambassadors will raise funds to support the organisation’s inspiring Girls’ Education Program. The Girls' Education Program ensures that girls build skills to succeed in school and make key life decisions. More than 3 million girls have benefited since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Educating girls is widely acknowledged as the most effective way to address global poverty. Girls who finish school earn more, have smaller, healthier families and are more likely to educate their own kids, breaking the illiteracy cycle. Yet two-thirds of the world's illiterate people are women and girls.

Since 2009 many writers and illustrators in Australia (see full list below) have helped Room to Read to spread the word about the importance of education and also raised over AUD$150,000 to support Room to Read’s literacy and girls’ education programs.

It costs just a $1 a day to keep a girl in school with the material and guided support she needs to succeed in school and beyond.

By Stepping UP for Gender Equality you will be helping to ensure an entire generation is not left behind.
